Écrit par Honoré de Balzac, le roman La Peau de Chagrin paraît en 1831. Il fait le récit du jeune Raphaël de Valentin qui, après avoir eu l'intention de se suicider, découvre une "peau de chagrin" chez un antiquaire. Sur cette peau d'animal, un message est gravé : "Si tu me possèdes tu possèderas tout. Mais ta vie m'appartiendra. Dieu l'a voulu ainsi. Désire, et tes désirs seront accomplis. Mais règle tes souhaits sur ta vie. Elle est là. À chaque vouloir, je décroitrai comme tes jours. Me veux-tu ? Prends. Dieu t'exaucera. - Soit !"
Il accepte ce pacte diabolique. La Peau magique le rend riche, et il reçoit l'amour de Pauline; mais au fur et à mesure de ses voeux, la peau rapetisse et Raphaël est de plus en plus malade. Autrefois désespéré, il meurt avec le regret de ne pas pouvoir continuer à vivre.
Ainsi, du début à la fin du livre, Raphaël ne sait plus s'il a envie de vivre ou de mourir, avant ce renversement final.
Ici, je joue avec la fiction : j'imagine et j'écris les mots de Raphaël, à la place du message gravé originellement, dans le roman, sur la peau. C'est une phrase qui m'appartient aussi.

It tells the story of the young Raphaël de Valentin who, after having intended to commit suicide, discovers a "skin of grief" in an antique dealer. On this animal skin, a message is engraved: "If you have me you will own everything. But your life will be mine. God willed it so. Desire, and your desires will be fulfilled. But rule your wishes over your life. It is there. With each will, I'll decrease like your days. Do you want me? Take. God will answer you. "
He accepts this devilish pact. The Magic Skin makes him rich, and he receives the love of Pauline; but the skin shrinks and Raphael is more and more ill. Once desperate, he dies with the regret of not being able to continue living.
Thus, from the beginning to the end of the book, Raphaël does not know any more if he wants to live or die, before this final reversal.
Here, I play with fiction : I imagine and write Raphael's words, in place of the message originally engraved, in the novel, on the skin. It's a phrase that also belongs to me.
